The Turbosherbet Rainbow

We began recording TURBOSHERBET within months of releasing the album SHE. The label wanted to capitalize on SHE’s success at college radio and a raft of great reviews. My dreams of becoming a full-time recording artist were coming true!

Producer John Fields and I approached the new album in the same manner as SHE, with he and I in the kitchen, bringing in members of Greazy Meal for spice, including Ken Chastain, Tommy Barbarella, Jim Anton and Julius Collins. Mike Ruekberg and Dorian Crozier would contribute mightily.

This made for a terrific studio band. And the album, like SHE was made quickly in what seemed like just 10 sessions.

For TURBOSHERBET, the first song we recorded was “She Said Yeah“, a musical explosion between John and Dorian. They played with such derring-do, each one pushing the other further, syncopating to every detail of my guitar. John’s freaky, counterpoint backing vocals, his scatted guitar solo, and the insane abuse of the jazz samples I’d brought in were all a part of the boldness. If there was going to be room on the track for me, I’d have to go big and push my boundaries as a singer.

John, worked fast and furiously, topping what we’d done on SHE. And I sat in the front row watching the fireworks as he built one insane music track after another, foremost the epic “Bygones”. It’s Queen, ELO and Who all in one… but pure unhinged Willie too. Taking our hero worship to a new level, that track alone would earn me a whole new layer of fans, and John too as a producer. In the era of Jellyfish, there was an audience waiting.

John is a consummate musician. He can play any instrument (even ones he doesn’t know how to play). On the contrary, if you need scrappy performances, I’m your guy. So, I became the odd pearl in John’s clam shell of musical delight. In fact, he would pointedly use me to add disruptive touches, beauty marks, and punchlines. And I was always game! Then around those personality spots he’d build amazing landscapes. Just dig “Home By Friday” or “Raincan”. Any weird idea I had he was as eager to add into the mix. And if I had one fantastical notion, he had three more. The album was made by two people always saying, “Yes, and….” Whether it was building in a measure of 5:4 in a 4:4 song like “Drunken Young Men”, or creating an extra long coda on “Home By Friday”, or using an electric shaver to play a solo on “Two Charcoal Hearts”, or adding a turntable scratching DJ on “Doorbells”, everything was in bounds on this rock album.

Tour with Greazy Meal 1996

Tour with Greazy Meal 1996

This sense of adventure permeated everything. For “So Turned On” he sent me out to my shag-carpeted touring van in the parking lot, with an SM-57 microphone and a 100 foot mic cable, so I could thrash about and not hurt myself while giving my best Trent Reznor vocal performance. Got it on the first take, man!

And when I brought in “Bygones” and showed him the opening lick John shouted, “FUZZ BASS!” So that’s me playing that crazy wah-wah, fuzz-tanked bruising bastard of a riff, which we simply looped. What prompted Dorian to quit playing in the coda and come back in with earth-moving drum fills for the song’s second finale (because one wasn’t enough), we may never know. But the tape was rolling and we caught it and kept it. John’s overdubs are pure madness.

During the summer of 1996 we finished TURBOSHERBET, aptly titled by my touring drummer Chris Lakey, who was the first to note how colorful everything sounded.

Conquerors on Michael Feldmans Whad Ya Know 1999

Conquerors, Michael Feldmans Whad Ya Know 1999

We took the record on the road with James F. Weber on guitar/keyboards, John Guion and Craig Holets on bass and Chris “Lakestar” Lakey on drums. Chris also played samples and sang exquisite backing vocals. Coastal tours and a huge contest victory in Chicago led to a high profile gig at the Los Angeles Grammy® Showcase, which boosted the record nicely. Meanwhile Steven Greenberg and his team at October Records supported the tour and album with a dedication I’d never before had behind me.

In the years following TURBOSHERBET, John Fields would go on to build a platinum-selling production career, helping to forge the sound of Jonas Brothers, Switchfoot, Andrew WK, Mandy Moore, u to very recently, Busted and Cory Wong. After the tours, I hid out in by 60’s freakbeat band The Conquerors, playing keyboards and prancing about with the boys. Then in 1999 I moved to LA to work on a new solo album and follow up on the indelible work I did with John.

Lyrics

She Said Yeah

When are we going to make love…

She said yeah, she said yeah, oh she said it
So when are we going to, when are we going to
Make love

I’ve been tidily
Wholly undeniably
Flat out and completely rejected

All I want to do is make love
Her body’s all I ever think of
If she’d just say, “yeah”, yeah, yeah

If I was just a floozy
A boozing loser wanna-be
Maybe I could take some rejection

All I want to do is cuddle
She’d be melting to a puddle
She’d see I’m so lovable
If she’d just say, “yeah”, yeah, yeah, yeah

She said yeah, she said yeah, oh she said it
She said yeah, she said yeah, baby she said it
So when are we going to, when are we going to
Make love

When are we going to make love…

I’ve been tidily
Wholly undeniably
Flat out and completely rejected

You’ve been bated but not taken
I’m the boy for whom you’re waiting
So grab a tail, don’t be shaken
Just keep saying “yeah”, yeah, yeah, yeah

She said yeah, she said yeah, baby she said it
She said yeah, she said yeah, baby she said it
So when are we going to, when are we going to
Make love

When are we going to make love…

Two Charcoal Hearts

Two charcoal hearts
We stick together
Birds of a feather
Two charcoal hearts

Planets collide
You won’t impress us
Charmed like asbestos
Two charcoal hearts

My how those long distance bills
They sure add up

So if you’re feeling tart
And they’re much the lessor
Call me professor
Two Charcoal Hearts

My how those long distance bills
They sure add up

Two charcoal hearts…

Home By Friday

Just loan me the keys to Betsy
I won’t drive recklessly
Keep her feet on the highway
And I’ll be home by Friday
You’ve got my word
My word’s a very good word
And I’ll be home by Friday
This time I ain’t lying

With Bar-b-que from the city
Don’t you worry your pretty little head
Or lift a finger
Daddy’s going to bring home dinner
You’ve got my word
My word’s a very good word

And I’ll be home by Friday
This time I ain’t lying

Be kind, be mine
I don’t like what I see

Yo little girlie two shoes (shacking up with some good friends)
I’m bringing home some good news (no chicks or musicians)
I found a job up in Northwest (number’s been disconnected)
I’ll wire some and mail the difference (call you from the filling station)
You’ve got my word
My word’s a very good word
And I’ll be home by Friday
This time I ain’t lying

Flowers For The Lady

Hey waiter, can I have a flower for the lady?
It’s not her birthday or anniversary
Say waiter well can I get some flowers for my baby?
Cause she’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen

I want a limo that runs on hot toddies
‘Cause I’m blowing my last dime right
There better be room for something kind of naughty
‘Cause the girl done love how this poor boy provides

Say waiter can I have a flower for the lady?
Just pluck one off of that old Maitre d’
Say waiter well can I get a flower for my baby?
‘Cause she’s the only girl that’s right by me.

I want a limo that runs on hot toddies
‘Cause I’m blowing my last dime right
And there better be leg room for something kind of naughty
‘Cause the girl done love how this poor boy provides

Say waiter let’s have a round of flowers for the lady?
It’s not the 14th of February
Say waiter well can I get one flower for my baby?
‘Cause she’s the sweetest thing a man done, one man done, this man’s seen.

Raincan

I wander up a hill
To see the city by the bay it fills with bildge
And all the sewage of one day
I’m blown away

So I bought myself a raincan
I prayed for water

I ride my bike through town
For years I never feared until they knocked me down
They stole my shit and kicked my face
I am amazed

So I bought myself a raincan
I prayed for water
My raincan caught a cup
Of bildge and water

A car pulls up the curb
The window rolls as a pistol is exposed
He says, “No whities on my turf”
His pistol squirts

refrain

A friend pulls me aside
He said stop singing about the issues of our day
Everything you’ve said is just so base
You’re just a pretty face

refrain

My Complicated Friend

Please don’t make this difficult, my complicated friend
Just this once don’t make such a big ordeal

Simple is as my advice, my complicated friend
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel

And don’t go muck it up, up in flames, your life, oo-we-oo-wa-oo

So please don’t make this more difficult than it has to be
My complicated friend

And don’t go muck it up, up in flames, your life, oo-we-oo-wa-oo

So please don’t make this more difficult than it has to be

I need you to look right here, I fear we’re near the end
Teach your heart to beat while keeping steeled

And don’t go muck it up, up in flames, your life, oo-we-oo-wa-oo

So please don’t make this more difficult than it has to be
My complicated friend…

So Turned On

I heard a naughty rumor about you
And it’s got me so turned on
Couldn’t tell by judging the cover
Took you for the bookish one
So would you read my mind if I asked you?
Before I implode

You might assume I’m bringing you some harm
I swim with Sharks, you hang with Jets
No diseases or dangerous firearms
Fish for me, I’m all you’ll catch
So would you feed me a line if I begged you to?
Before I implode
So would you bait my line if I begged you to?
Before I implode
I hear it’s all true about you
You got me so turned on baby

The boys were holding discussion
When my friend kind of mentions you
Talk turns from vile to discusting
He heard the nasty rumor too (spoken)
So would you toss me a bone if I need you to
Before I explode
So would you like me to show you what I can do
Before I explode
I hear it’s all true about you
You got me so turned on baby…

Bygones

#1: I laid up all night
#2: Learn to let it go
#1: So what she did was alright?
#2: Better you never know
You’ve been worked up for way too long
Put your bygones where they belong

#1: I’ll show her what she shows me
#2: Fat lot of good it’ll do
#1: Like click my heals and count to three?
#2: Like pull them up but don’t get screwed
You’ve been pissed off for way too long
Let your bygones where they belong

#1: Big black books of rules
#2: The price of her company
#1: So grab a piece of gratitude
#2: She’ll only do as she please
You’ve gone cocked half way too long
Stick your bygones where they belong

Long nights trying to ask you
For probably what you don’t know
So sick of harrassing
Learn to let it go, learn to let go, learn to let go…

Party Dress

It’s a simple place to start
It’s an easy thing to say
But the world it’s so messed up
It never goes that way

At the risk of talking down
Or in the case of I don’t know
It’s a tired thing to say
I love you in your way

So you can take your pills
And it won’t rock my boat
You can get high till the cops stop by
Even if I don’t

You can keep your party dress
Hang it with the rest
Keep your party, party dress
Your party dress…

Doorbells

If I, hear a knock at our dinner-time door
I know I, know that knock from somewhere before
There’s a thing or two I should’ve let you know
But now the reeper’s come to sew
Ditching doorbells, ringing doorbells
I can’t tell her anymore lies

If she says, “hey guess what?” I swallow so hard
And when she, reads my mail I fear what she saw
There’s a pair of gargoils learing off the roof
They’re all a-coming home to roost
Ditching doorbells, ringing doorbells
I, I can’t tell her anymore lies…

bridge

Making sure, you and her are never in the same room
Keeping my, stories straight in case you’re accidently introduced
The stoop is full of hounds basking in the sun
They lift a hind leg and run
Ditching doorbells, ringing doorbells
I, I, I can’t tell her anymore lies…

Drunken Young Men

The piano strikes a chord and all the soldiers roar, “hooray”
Steins pounding tables in time
All’s forgotten in rhyme

Sober serving girl, feigns a smile and does what she can
Lacing up their trousers and boots
She can’t loosen the noose

The news is not so good once again for drunken young men
Jiggers parting their grins, drunken young men
You’d better tidy your affairs while you can, drunken young men

The veteran orders rounds on grounds that all join at croquet
Ignore him and he’ll go away
Cripple waving his cane

Tired hired girls dance for drunken young boys
Kicking up skirt and hoop
Bruising barely the truth

The news is not so good once again for drunken young men
A toast hangs at every smooth chin, drunken young men
With nothing yet to will to their kin, drunken young men

Tiny little girl has some news to tell a drunken young boy
She’ll be carrying to term
Will he be returned?

The news is not so good once again for drunken young men
Everything, wine, beer and gin, for drunken young men
Well you may not come home with your limbs
And taverns will remind girls of him
And the piano will close on the hands of drunken young men

Drunken young men…
Drunken again

Sleeping With Girls (Revisited)

Hop between the sheets
A man never felt so nice
Toenails sharp as blades
Feet as cold as ice
Touch her leg to see her squirm
Roust her sleepy world
Oh, paradise
Sleeping with girls

Smell of smoky hair
Man we were out all night
Smoking hashish cigarettes
With the police chief’s wife
I check her breath, it ain’t too bad
Come on let’s give it another whirl
Kiss me twice
Sleeping with girls

Elbow in the face
I woke up with Charley Horse
Stub my baby toe
Fumbling for a bathroom door
Her house mates come home drunken-faced
As I’m naked like a shining pearl
Ah, blow the dice
Sleeping with girls

My kingdom for a toothbrush
To scrub my self respect
I’m been searching for pride somewhere
So hard when your soaking wet

Talking in my sleep
Oh a mighty risky proposition
Especially when that weren’t her
Bent over in that position
I’m not well rested no, no, no, no, no
Fact is I’m miserable
Ah, serves me right sleeping with girls
Serves me right sleeping with girls
Serves me right sleeping with girls
