The Singles Series: “Invisible” – Tracking Bass

Transparent recording process reveals all.

Originally I’d shown up at John Field’s studio to talk him through my drum vision for “Invisible”, a new song by Cliff Hillis & myself. Instead, John picked up his trusty Harmony bass, and got to work laying it down. Without any thought or discussion we kept last week’s rough drum edit muted. Besides, he’d put some lovely reverb on my voice and at least for today, it was all we needed to hear.

This and the next video illuminate the building of the bass part. Watching John play is a pleasure. Enjoy!

John remarks at the very end of one video how my voice sounds like John Denver–which is apt because back in 1995, he first invited me into his Funkytown Studio in Golden Valley, MN to record a tribute song for “Minneapolis Does Denver”. My favorite song of Denver’s was “Sweet Surrender,” which we cut live with piano and vocals by John Eric Thiede and drums by Dorian Crozier. Nearly 20 years later, it’s still great to indulge our musical friendship.
