Dog Jealousy & Elvis

Inspiration for "Dog's Day"

Inspiration for "Dog's Day"

“Dog’s Day” is a silly song that I’ll probably never fully arrange. But including it here was important because it marks the months when I fell in love with my wife (a veterinarian). Dogs were never really my thing, but she changed that, and suddenly an empathy with the beasts grew in my heart. It was her planting those seeds. Magically, a song from a dog’s point of view popped into my head––a dog jealous of his master’s loitering boyfriend. The scenario was mirrored by reality. Willa, my wife’s dog since way before I’d come into the picture, was a real bitch to me. Never willing to get out of the way during those more intimate moments.

Favorite Billy Preston album

Favorite Billy Preston album

“Ready To Love” stands out as my favorite here. Maybe because it’s a blast to play on guitar. But also, it reminds me of a saccharine song Elvis Presley could have sung in one of his awful films. I was trying to channel a little early Billy Preston from those first Apple Records albums of his––but, as usual, missed the mark.

Releasing a mostly solo album in conjunction with the WISELY album made sense because I knew I’d be doing a lot of solo touring. Plus, there were so many demos lying around from those sessions. I’d gone back to my writing journals and tried to finish most anything I’d ever started. It seemed a shame to bury all that work. You can probably tell that a couple of these tracks were the exact recordings that we built full band arrangements upon––I think “Ella”, “California” & “Cracked World View”.

Lyrics

Ella

You kiss my neck and it feels sweet
A thousand circles draw complete
And deep inside this painful world
A love endures
And baby don’t you touch ground

Our paths were never very clear
Our motives might have been impure
But after all this time a love endures
Remember surely
I’ll be there when you’re down
Yeah and baby don’t you touch ground

Cable cars, Manhattan bars, where Sundays last forever
The things that made us sad seem far away

Yeah and baby don’t you touch ground

Flatboard schemes, new human beings, remember once I said never
The things that made us sad seem far away

And so we go following dreams
For good or worse or in between
And who’d have thought that with one little girl
We could change our world
And baby don’t you touch ground
Yeah, Ella b. don’t you touch ground
‘Cause daddy’s here when you’re down
And I’ll be here when you’re down

His Eye, It’s Wandering

I saw you walking with him around the arcade
There’s something you ought to know before naming the day
Parisian women are fine, he knows this well
His eye, it’s wandering

I saw him buying champaign for your anniversary
He was talking to a woman in line, he paid for her things
Now why’s he trying to score in a game he can’t play?
His eye, it’s wandering

Tend your goals
Maintain composure
Lead the life that you like
And don’t be blind, his eye it’s wandering

His eyes would roll if you told him you’re up on his schemes
He’d probably blame your girlfriends for just wanting part of his scene
Parisian women all talk, he knows this well
His eye, it’s wandering

I am wandering, I am wandering, I am wandering, I am wandering

Cracked World View

We stood to watch it fall
The wall that cut us all
Disintegrates into everyone

The things you felt were real
Impossible to conceal
Fear melts away into joy

So why are we still fighting the cancer
We all know the question follows the answer

And every day I grow a little bit farther from you
And love grows smaller in the din and the hollar of your
Cracked world view
I met a lot of people and people are divided it’s true
But every day’s a reason for a shorter season of your
Cracked world view

The sky turned orange blaze
Gone arosol insane
Like brotherhood swallowed everyone

That’s when we knew we’d been blind
It’d crawled inside our mind and said
“No one loves nobody”

Well we know the love and we know the anger now
Look in the mirror there stands a stranger

And every day I grow a little bit farther from you
And love grows smaller in the din and the hollar of your
Cracked world view
I met a lot of people and people are divided it’s true
But every day’s a reason for a shorter season of your
Cracked world view

Automaton

I was born in the sink of a basement apartment
To a dad who had no mom and a mom who never asked where dads went
Now you keep me hanging on out of deference for my keen mind
And your friends don’t object ‘cause they think my raincoats fur-lined

Automaton, any boy you like
I am a man, close but not quite
I feel so real but my eyes aren’t right
Automaton man
Automaton I am
Mixin a cocktail I am your thin man

I’ve played at all the clubs of discretion and refinement
No matter how I try I ride in second class compartments
Well now everywhere with you I hear the sound of tape in rewind
You don’t want to be alone and God forbid you might die trying

Automaton, any one you like
I charge all day and run at night
It feels all wrongs but I looks all right
Automaton man
Automaton I am
Mixin a cocktail call me the thin man

I’m going to be who I want to be
You’re going to do what you got to do
Well I’m going to say what I want to say
And you’re going to go where you want to go anyway

I done wrestled alligator and tussled with the great white whale
I stood and held the door while the lovely lady did my toe nails
Well it occurs to me that you’re heading into lean times
You don’t want to be alone and I’d hate to see you die trying

Automaton, any who you like
I’m razor thin with an appetite
My clothes all fit bit it’s a trick of light, trick of light, trick of light

Automaton, any boy you like
I am a man, close but not quite
I feel so real but my eyes aren’t right
Automaton man
Automaton I am
Fixing you cocktails I am your thin man

Dog’s Day

It’s been a dog’s day
Dog’s day
The way she tossed her coat across the davenport
Tapped me on the head to quiet my concern

It’s been a hound’s life
A moon-eyed hound’s life
I nudge and nudge the hand that didn’t want to play
Jumped up on the lap, the lap that said ‘no go away’

I long just to hold her
With words I’d have told her
All the things lovers should say
With lips I’d have kissed her
My lover my master
But she’ll never know this dog’s day

He’s in his wolf clothes
His furry wolf clothes
I’ve such contempt for all his chocolates and Champagne
That’s all he ever brought when he’d drop by to entertain

I long just to hold her
With words I’d have told her
All the gentle things lovers say
With lips I’d have kissed her
My lover my master
But she’ll never know this dog’s day

For every night he makes her weep
It’s one more night my love withers and dies
Dies on the leash

It’s such a cold night
Under the porch light
I’ll steam the window pane in hopes he’ll keep his paws away
I’m sure the cork will pop as her defense evaporates

I long just to hold her
With words I’d console her
With everything sweet lovers could say
With lips I’d have kissed her
And finally convinced
But she’ll never know this dog’s day

Nope, God didn’t make me that way
She’ll never know dog’s day

My Complicated Friend

Please don’t make this difficult, my complicated friend
Just this once don’t make such a big ordeal

Simple is as my advice, my complicated friend
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel

And don’t go muck it up, up in flames, your life, oo-we-oo-wa-oo

So please don’t make this more difficult than it has to be

I need you to look right here, I fear we’re near the end
Teach your heart to beat while keeping steeled

And don’t go muck it up, up in flames, your life, oo-we-oo-wa-oo

So please don’t make this more difficult than it has to be
My complicated friend…

Ready To Love

I was afraid
But now I’m ready to love
I’m ready to give of myself
To somebody else in love

I lived in doubt
Tried living without
I want you to know that I won’t
Be going it alone without love

I don’t know who
I don’t know where
Could you coo?
Would you dare?
But I’ve never known like now
But I’ve never known like now
But I’ve never known like now
I’m ready to love

So take my hand
And then you will know
I’m Filled with the hope and the joy
All to employ with my love

This heart that bleeds
Without a wound
A summer sky
Eats air balloons
And I’ve never known like now
Yeah I’ve never known like now
Yeah I’ve never known like now
I’ m ready to love

I’m ready to love
I’m ready to love
I’m ready to love…

But I’ve never known like now
And I’ve never known like now
And I’ve never known like now
I’m ready to love

“Hey bird I’m done.”

California

California’s killing me
She’s outside waiting in a Cherokee
Wasted hours on a Ouija board
I got more friends here than I can afford
Maybe for tonight green lights will align down Sunset

Jumped into a dream and drove
Got to the beach almost
Don’t let the clouds stop us now ‘cuz I adore ya
I wanna fly, I wanna float
So I’m coming down your coast
Trying to breathe here
How come no one warns you, California

Fourteen freaks on a magic bus
That’s not exactly how I pictured us
Hanging out by the golden door
There’s something missing here I can’t ignore
No one understands your circles in the sand like me

Jumped into a dream and drove
Got to the beach almost
Don’t let the clouds stop us now ‘cuz I adore ya
I wanna fly, I wanna float
So I’m coming down your coast
Trying to breathe here
How come no one warns you, California…

Jumped into a dream and drove
Got to the beach almost
Don’t let the clouds stop us now ‘cuz I adore ya
I wanna fly, I wanna float
So I’m coming down your coast
Trying to breathe here
How come no one warns you, California…

Drunken Young Men

The piano strikes a chord and all the soldiers roar, “hooray”
Steins pounding tables in time
All’s forgotten in rhyme

Sober serving girl, feigns a smile and does what she can
Lacing up their trousers and boots
She can’t loosen the noose

The news is not so good once again for drunken young men
Jiggers parting their grins, drunken young men
You’d better tidy your affairs while you can, drunken young men

The veteran orders rounds on grounds that all join at croquet
Ignore him and he’ll go away
Cripple waving his cane

Tired hired girls dance for drunken young boys
Kicking up skirt and hoop
Bruising barely the truth

The news is not so good once again for drunken young men
A toast hangs at every smooth chin, drunken young men
With nothing yet to will to their kin, drunken young men

Tiny little girl has some news to tell a drunken young boy
She’ll be carrying to term
Will he be returned?

The news is not so good once again for drunken young men
Everything, wine, beer and gin, for drunken young men
Well you may not come home with your limbs
And taverns will remind girls of him
And the piano will close on the hands of drunken young men

Drunken young men…
Drunken again

Only Losing Me

Somewhere in my parallel you lie a little
To what’s left of my middle, that’s your right

Somewhere in four directions
I could fly on a riddle
In your arms, but they’re brittle and I fall

The tricks you got away with make me cringe
That I’m okay with your massive passing fancy finding free
That’s OK, you’re only losing me
Hey, if change is meant to be
And losing was okay
We’d give in and agree
True, we’ll let blame be the sign
That you were never really mine
The way you’d want to see
You’re only losing me

Somewhere by the bedside
I feign that I’m little
When you play noncommittal

When someone so peripheral
Can’t sustain even bliss
Pull, shoot and miss
Then we kiss
All we wish for
Goodbye

The one’s you played a game with
Stitched and staid
I walk away with
A birthdays half-forgotten memory
Puzzle piece,
You’re only losing me
Hey, if change is meant to be
And losing was okay
We’d give in then agree
True, we’ll let blame be the sign
That you were never really mine
The way you’d want to see
You’re only losing me

Hey, hey
True, well love does not unwind
And you were never really mine
The way you’d want to see
You’re only losing me

Hey, if change is meant to be
And losing was okay
You’re only losing me

Duration

Bring me on lassy
Take me along
We’ll find a canyon
Make it our home, make it our home
Well bring me ‘long with you now
Show me your dreams
Bring me to places
I ain’t never been to, I ain’t never been

I’m in for the duration
I’m in for the dura-
Take me on down on you crusading mission
I’m in for the dura-a-a-tion

Take me from body now
Show me your mind
My life it’s yours
So don’t leave it behind, I love your behind, flaughty!
Take me from territory
Fortress of gold
I’ll walk the fences
You take the road, I’ll take the road.

Chorus…
